In July 2027, Lancaster is preparing to welcome young people, coaches, leaders and civic guests from our twin and partner cities for the International Youth Games.
The Games bring together sport, friendship, culture and community. Young people will compete, meet new friends, experience Lancaster and take part in a week that is about much more than results.
Planning is now underway, with local sports clubs, volunteers, schools, community partners and supporters all playing an important role in helping Lancaster deliver a memorable Games.

Exact timings and final programme details will be confirmed closer to the Games.
Lancaster 2027 is being planned as a multi-day international youth event involving sport, cultural exchange, civic links and community participation.
The programme is expected to include sports competitions, opening and closing ceremonies, social events for young people and leaders, civic activities, and opportunities for local families and volunteers to be part of the Games.
The final programme will depend on confirmed sports, venues, partner cities, funding, volunteers and local support.
A number of local sports and venues are already part of the planning for Lancaster 2027. Further sports and activities may be added as planning develops and local leaders confirm their involvement.
Current planning includes:
Athletics
Badminton
Basketball
Rowing
Swimming
Tennis
Water Polo
Salt Ayre Leisure Centre
Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club
John O’Gaunt Rowing Club
Bowerham Lawn Tennis Club
Other sports and cultural activities may be considered as the programme develops.
Young people and leaders from Lancaster’s long-standing twin and partner cities are expected to be hosted by local families linked to participating sports, continuing one of the most important traditions of the International Youth Games.
Other visiting cities may use arranged accommodation, depending on final numbers and agreements.
Transport planning will support movement between accommodation, sports venues and key Games events.
The organising committee is exploring practical options to help participants, leaders and guests move around Lancaster safely and efficiently during the week.
The Games are not only about sport. Lancaster 2027 is expected to include an opening ceremony, closing ceremony, social events for young people and leaders, and opportunities to celebrate international friendship.
These moments help create the shared memories that make the International Youth Games special: meeting new people, representing your city, supporting your team and being part of something bigger than one event.
Lancaster 2027 is currently in the planning and development stage. Sports, venues, city numbers, host family arrangements, volunteer roles, funding and the final programme will continue to be confirmed over the coming months.
Updates will be added to this website as plans develop.
Whether you are a young person, parent, sport leader, volunteer, business, school or community supporter, there will be ways to get involved in Lancaster 2027.
The Games rely on local people, clubs, organisations and supporters working together to help create a memorable international event for young people.
